Definition of human resource management

The definition of Human Resource Management (HRM) is the task within an organisation that focuses on the recruitment, management, and direction for the people who work in the organisation. Human Resource Management can also be performed by line managers, company managers and CEO’s etc. Human Resource Management will naturally also serve as the company’s primary connection with the employees’ representative which is usually a workers union. Human Resource Management is an organisational role which deals with issues related to people such as compensation, hiring, routine management, organisation development, safety, wellbeing, benefits, staff inspiration, communication, administration, training etc.
Human Resource Management is also a strategic and all-inclusive approach to managing people at the workplace and it also plays a part in overseeing culture and environmental issues and dealings. Effective Human Resource Management enables staff to contribute effectively and efficiently to the overall company effort and direction and the achievement of the institution’s goals and objectives. Human Resource Management is moving away from the methods of traditional personnel, administrational and operational roles, which are increasingly becoming subcontracted. Human Resource Management is nowadays expected to add value to the strategic application of employees and employee programs which in turn influence the business in various measurable ways. The new role of Human Resource Management involves the tactical direction and HRM ethics and measurements to demonstrate management, resource, and company value.

Human Resource Management is a product of the human relations movement from the early 20th century, when researchers began to document ways of creating business values through the calculated management of the labour force. The job was primarily dominated by transactional work such as salary and benefits direction but due to globalisation, business association, technological progressions, and further research, Human Resource Management now focuses on a strategic group of enterprises like unions and acquirements, this also has certain diversity around itself also. But in start-up companies, HRM duties may be performed by a minority of trained professionals or even by non-HRM staff this may be because larger, more industrialised companies usually house an entire well-designed group dedicated to the task, and with staff specialising in various HRM tasks and functional leadership engaging in strategic decision, this making creates impact throughout the whole business.

There are almost half a million Human Resource Management practitioners in the United States alone and many thousands more worldwide. The highest ranking director for human resource management is generally Chief HRM Officer (although title does sometimes differ within other industries) he/she is the highest ranking HRM executive in most companies and would normally report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on any developments, issues or changes. He/she also generally works with the Board of Directors (If applicable)

Within companies, HRM positions generally fall into one of two categories: generalist roles and specialist roles. Generalists usually support employees directly with their questions, complaints, and plans. They handle all features of human resources work, and therefore require an extensive variety of awareness. The responsibilities of HRM generalists can vary widely, depending on their employer’s specific needs. Specialists, on the other hand, work in a specific HRM role. Some people will spend an entire career as either a generalist or a specialist while others will firstly obtain experiences from each role and choose a path later.

By learning about, identifying and knowing the differences between the two roles, one can assuredly make a decision about which they wish to pursue, if such a career is desired by them. Overall, Human Resource Management provides a gateway to pursue a great career and it is ranked as one of the best jobs in the world due to it many beneficial factors

To summarise the definition of human resource management; it is a responsibility within an administration which focuses on the recruitment, supervision, and assistance for the people who work in the administration and it is to date, one of the most sophisticated fields of work in the managing world today which plays a part in keeping companies intact and ensuring organisational stability
