Definition of environmental management actually lets us know the precautionary measures needs to be adopted in any kind of activity to take care of environment. However this work is formally done in industrial organizations. There are strict environmental laws in every country which bind each manufacturing concern not to hit environment at their all stages of the production. Such laws propose strict penalties including fines and imprisonments if an entity or individual violates them.
In every kind of manufacturing activity some liquid or solid is generated. If production is done through fuel-powered machines then smoke is also emitted if they are operated. So every manufacturing concern is bound by law not to spoil the surrounding environment by its emissions, waste and effluents. If they do so they have to face the legal action by their environmental authority.
So the definition of environmental management actually describes how environment is managed while doing a manufacturing activity. For this purpose big industries hire an environmental manager. His/her basic job is to advise the industry how to produce goods and products without harming the surrounding environment. This is not done verbally. For this purpose there are set parameters which every industry has to follow. These parameters are usually called the national environmental quality standards.
The job of the environmental manager is to devise ways and means to enable the production process to stay within the emission and waste-generation limits. Every kind of the industrial pollution including waste, effluent, and smoke should remain in a limited quantity that can be measured through the number of pollutants in them. For example in smoke there are various gases which are called pollutants. In industrial wastes lot of harmful substances are pollutants while industrial effluent has various toxic substances and elements that are considered quite harmful for the environment.
Under the definition of environmental management we come to know how these all types of industrial pollutions are kept within limit. Environmental manager monitors the manufacturing activity and identify the environmental deviation if found at any stage of the production. He/she has to develop a pollution control report on monthly basis to submit it to the environmental control agency. In case of any failure a legal action can be initiated against such industry.
So this is the definition of environmental management that educated us that:
- No one is allowed to harm the environment
- Every individual and entity is bound to take care of environment
- Any kind of production or development activity is not allowed to hit the environment beyond a certain limit
- Every manufacturing concern has to monitor its each production activity from environmental points of view
- Every industry has to submit its environmental management report to concerned pollution control authority
